The Sky So Big and Black, John Barnes

Everything I remember fondly from Heinlein's novels is in here, including a much more interesting Podkayne as well as Mars; but not the trivialization and flattening of enemies and the weak that weakened RAH's arguments fatally, and his stories frequently. (Not always; not in Podkayne....)

It's also a good noir detective or psychological story and leaves room for an entire philosophical sequel built around AI and disease evolution.
